A Lesson In Business

September 19, 2009 by steveboylephoto

When you travel you should always let the photo editors you work with know where you’re going.  You never know where an editor might need someone for an assignment.  I let the editors of ESPN RISE know that I would be in the Cape Cod/Boston/New England area to see if they had any location-specific assignments.  It turns out they did.  They hired me to shoot for their ESPN RISE Boston edition.

Here is a ridiculous test shot of me wearing the guys high school basketball uniform to make sure the red came out correctly against the blue background before the actual shoot took place.

For the story and photo shoot, ESPN RISE featured two high school basketball players, Katie Zenevitch, the best girls player in the state, and Carson Desrosiers, the top center in Massachusetts.  Both players are  from Central Catholic High School, in Lawrence, Massachusetts.  Katie will be playing for Boston College in 2010.  Carson was signed to Wake Forest for their 2010 season.  For this shoot, I decided to set up in the auditorium which doubled as their gymnasium.  The curtain on the stage was used as my backdrop.  I had the players jump off the stage onto a gymnastics mat.  You can view the tearsheets below.  To see more images from the shoot, click here.

Cape Cod Vacation/Work

September 16, 2009 by steveboylephoto

I recently spent some time in Cape Cod, relaxing and chasing the light.  We stayed in the town of Chatham.  Since we couldn’t go in the water because of the sharks, I brought my friend Caitlin along with me to shoot some scenic running shots.  During my chase,  I got a speeding ticket in Cape Cod’s National Seashore. Some selects from the shoot are below.  To view more, click here.

House of Hoops by Foot Locker

August 23, 2009 by steveboylephoto

A week ago I shot the grand opening event of House of Hoops inside the Cherry Hill, New Jersey’s Foot Locker.  House of Hoops is a special section of the store dedicated to basketball at select Foot Lockers across the county.  There were special appearances by Andre Iguodala and Thaddeus Young of the Philadelphia 76ers and radio personality Kathy Romano of the WMMR’s Preston & Steve Morning Show.  A few frames from the event are below.

ESPN RISE Tearsheets from Philly & New Jersey

August 10, 2009 by steveboylephoto

I finally got my hands on the PDF’s from some recent ESPN RISE shoots.  For the Philadelphia edition, I shot Emily Garrity, the #4 Lacrosse Recruit in the country, from Strath Haven High School.  Emily will be playing for North Carolina in 2010.  To see more images from the shoot, click here.

For the Northern New Jersey edition, I shot Brittany O’Donnell, the Softball Pitcher of the Year, from Red Bank Catholic High School.  We shot on location in Middletown, NJ at Battersbox Sports Academy which her father owns.  She has been signed by Notre Dame for the Softball 2010 season.  To see more images from the shoot, click here.

Runner’s World Magazine Tearsheets

July 31, 2009 by steveboylephoto

I just wanted to share a few pages from Runner’s World from their recent issues.  The images on these pages are actually quite diverse; a lit portrait indoors of former marathon champion Fred Klevan, a scenic runner in beautiful Joshua Tree National Park and still life in the studio on white.  Headed out on the trail this weekend for some backpacking on the Old Loggers Path, but stayed tuned for the October issue of Runner’s World which will feature Steve Boyle – Fitness Model!

Fun with Sleeping Bags in Philadelphia

July 30, 2009 by steveboylephoto

I’ve had this idea in my head for awhile.  It’s probably been done before but I wanted to give it a shot and I’m pleased with the results.  I rounded up a friend with a great smile and set up the studio with a mini trampoline along with 4 lights.  The idea was to create abstract shapes with the sleeping bags and the best way to do that was to put someone inside and have them jump around!  Fabi is in the red bag since it’s a women’s cut and I’m in the blue and yellow bags.  A gallery of selects from the shoot in my Philadelphia studio can be viewed here.  Maybe a magazine or company will like these, but it doesn’t matter, I had fun shooting them and the pictures make me laugh.  Enjoy!

Camping In Joshua Tree National Park

June 28, 2009 by steveboylephoto

If you are anywhere near Los Angeles or San Diego and have a few days to spare, I highly recommend the trek to Joshua Tree National Park.  I was only able to spend 2 days there but it was easily one of the most beautiful and breathtaking places I’ve ever been.  I brought the camera along to shoot a few frames of a friend running in the park and captured a few snaps on our adventures.  This trip came about after a slow month of May in Philadelphia for STEVE BOYLE PHOTO.  Ironically, June has been busy with multiple freelance assignments from both Runner’s World, ESPN Rise as well as a couple personal projects that I’m working on.  Stay tuned for images and tear sheets, but in the mean time, check out a couple of images from Joshua Tree.  Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter, @steveboylephoto

Kentucky Derby Image Galleries

May 28, 2009 by steveboylephoto

I spent a few days with friend Gary Bogdon in Louisville, Kentucky for the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby.  4am alarm clocks are commonplace during Derby week, but once you get to Churchill Downs you’ll beg for more time, especially on those early morning workouts.  Some of my favorite selects from the trip are below but a gallery of images can be seen here.

My approach to the Derby is the same as any other event that is littered with photographers, be different.  It’s better to take a chance and fail than to make the same picture as 100 other photographers.  For example, I was stationed at turn 3 during the race.  There were two other photographers within a 1/4 mile of me, if anything good happened near us, we were on it and only us.  Nothing happened, but that was the gamble.  Another downside to that position was that eventual winner Mine That Bird was so far back at turn 3 that I have no frames with him in it during the race.  A little bit of hustle got me to the winner’s circle in time to shoot some celebration such as this.
